About the HLT Program

Houston Leadership for Tomorrow (formerly known as MLT-Houston) is a regional affiliate of Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT). Since 2005, Houston Leadership for Tomorrow (HLT) has been identifying the best and brightest African American, Hispanic and Native American high school students and transforming their potential into a reality.

THE NEED

HLT was formed to fill the void Houston will experience if the city's largely minority youth population is not part of the pipeline of talent to assume future leadership roles. By positioning Houston's next generation of minority leaders for the best possible college choices, career opportunities and civic engagement we are helping to ensure that Houston has the leadership talent needed for decades to come.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

The cornerstone of the HLT program is the HLT Leadership Summit, an intensive on-campus assembly of the Houston area’s high-achieving high school seniors that includes workshops, seminars and learning journeys. The Leadership Summit is held over the course of two weeks in June.

During the school year there may be other activities, as well as unique and enriching program events sponsored by HLT program partners. Entry into HLT alumni network begins at the end of the school year and expands the opportunity to build relationships with other HLT alums who share an interest in becoming a leader in Houston.

The HLT Leadership Summit

The Leadership Summit is an interactive, problem solving-oriented learning experience that opens participants’ eyes to the skills effective leaders need, as well as to their own strengths, weaknesses and potential in a way that many have said is life-changing. It results in an expansion of college, career and leadership aspirations. Additionally it is strong preparation for collegiate, business and civic leadership roles, as well as for early career success.

Houston's Current Leaders Teach Houston's Future Leaders

The Leadership Summit offers intensive interactive workshops, seminars, dialogues and industry immersions that help to sharpen key leadership and life skills that typically take years to acquire.

Professionals from prestigious companies including Hines, McKinsey & Company, Goldman Sachs, Federal Reserve Bank of Houston, St. Luke’s Heart Institute and MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as Houston’s Mayor and other prominent leaders have conducted sessions. The access granted to these leaders is an important first step for participants in building their network of door-opening professional relationships.

Peer Group Learning

HLT Emerging Leaders also learn from each other through team collaboration, competition and living in dormitories with other high-achievers. The Leadership Summit ends with team presentations that are judged by a panel of business professionals and the competition to be the winning team is strong!

Top-Tier College and University Attendance

The Leadership Summit helps position participants for acceptance to top colleges that are a strong personal fit for their career aspirations, but might otherwise not be considered. While all of the HLT Class of 2011 planned to attend college, nearly half of HLT alumni have been admitted to top-tier colleges and universities including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and New York University along with Rice and the University of Texas. A record 54% of the HLT Class of 2011 is currently attending top-tier universities.
