THE Leadership Summit IS UNIQUE
The Leadership Summit an interactive, problem solving-oriented learning experience that opens participants’ eyes to the skills effective leaders need, as well as to their own strengths, weaknesses and potential in a way that many have said is life-changing. It is the core of the HLT experience and is strong preparation for collegiate, business and civic leadership roles, as well as for early career success. Participants experience this dynamic learning environment led by local professionals and prominent leaders in a high-achieving peer group.
THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT teaches in a variety of WAys
There are a wide range of leadership development activities, skill building sessions, industry and career explorations, and civic dialogues s that have included:
- Learning Journeys into Houston’s key industry sectors
- Learning Journeys into Houston’s civic and social challenges and opportunities
- Meetings with prominent Houston business and civic leaders
- Overnight stays in the dormitories on the campuses of Rice University and the University of Houston
- Competitive team presentations judged by a panel of business professionals

HLT Emerging Leaders have already mastered academic study skills. The Leadership Summit helps position them for top-tier colleges, sharpen key leadership and life skills that typically take years to acquire, excel in college and have early career success. Topics have included:

Houston has a number of important industries that will need HLT Alumni as leaders in the future. Each year, the Leadership Summit has offered a unique glimpse into challenges and opportunities of a few of those industries that have included:
- Health care
- Energy
- Financial services
- Commercial real estate
- Entertainment
It is has also been forum to explore civic and social issues with dialogues with the Mayor of Houston and other civic leaders on issues such as:
- Education
- Civil rights
- Social services
- Transportation
THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT BRINGS A COMPETIVE PEER GROUP TOGETHER
HLT Emerging Leaders learn from each other. Creative and critical thinking and interpersonal skills are sharpened through team collaboration, competition and living in dormitories with other high-achievers. There are team presentations that are judged by a panel of business professionals and the competition to be the winning team is strong! This high-performing peer group access that is initiated at Leadership Summit expands with entry into the HLT alumni network.
THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT BENEFITS
The Leadership Summit helps position participants for top colleges that are a strong personal fit for their career aspirations, but might otherwise not be considered. While all of the HLT Class of 2011 planned to attend college, nearly half of HLT alumni been admitted to top-tier colleges and universities including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and New York University along with Rice and the University of Texas. A record 54% of the HLT Class of 2011 is currently attending top-tier universities.
The experience expands college, career and leadership aspirations and focuses on the skill building and relationship development needed to fulfill these aspirations. Participants use the access granted to Houston’s leaders and professionals to begin building a network of professional relationships. Networking skills to open doors to internships, jobs, mentoring and more are developed.
Participants begin developing relationships with a high-performing peer group who share an interest in becoming a leader in Houston at some point in their career. This peer group access continues with membership in the HLT alumni network.
THE LEADERship SUMMT DATES
The Leadership Summit takes place over the course of two weeks in June and there is a one-day Orientation. The dates will be finalized in early 2012.

THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Participation requirements
Participants are not required to pay a fee to apply to HLT or participate, but there is a requirement of strong commitment to full participation and personal growth. Parents are encouraged to support HLT by participating as volunteers and making a voluntary financial contribution.
HLT Emerging Leader Attendance
HLT Emerging Leaders are required to attend the entire Leadership Summit. They participate in sessions during the day and stay in a dormitory overnight. Attendance at the Orientation is also required. (Parents are required to attend Orientation also.)
Parent Participation
In addition to attending the Orientation there are several ways parents can participate. Male and female chaperones are needed to stay overnight in the dorms, to supervise evening recreational activities and go on learning journeys that require leaving campus. Parents can also assist with logistics and meal distribution.
We ask each family to support HLT with a donation. Financial support is completely voluntary. However the goal is to have full participation of families, so no amount is too small. The suggested donation amounts are below.

THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Transportation ARRANGeMENTS
HLT Emerging Leaders are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Leadership Summit and are not permitted to have a vehicle on campus during the Leadership Summit.
