July 2009: Leadership Summit

During the 5th Leadership Summit, Houston Leadership for Tomorrow participants worked with Houston business and civic leaders to explore issues and solve complex problems that face the City of Houston. They also participated in energy, health care, and real estate learning journeys. Fellows resided on the campus of the University of Houston for Part I and Rice University for Part II of the Summit.

 

October 17, 2009: Team Business Box Building Workshop

This workshop gave HLT participants an opportunity for hands-on experience running a business. Summing up the event, Kyerra of Waltrip High School said "We were able to learn from a hands-on exercise the importance of running a business, the importance of having willing and able team members, and how important it is to have a sustainable strategy -a necessity and an advantage — in this ultimately competitive world in which we live." 


October 31, 2009: Mock Election and Media Fishbowl Dialogue

Mock Election and Media Fishbowl DialogueTwo weeks before the November 2009 mayoral election, HLT participants convened in the production studio of KPRC -Chanel 2 armed with knowledge of the four leading mayoral candidates and participated in a caucus-style mock election. The "election" was followed by a dialogue with Houston's leading journalists on challenges of covering 2009 Houston mayoral election. The dialogue was moderated by Channel 13 Anchor Melanie Lawson. Other guests included KPRC Channel 2 Reporter Mary Benson, Houston Chronicle Editor George Haj, Houston Defender CEO Sonny Messiah-Jiles, and KUHF-FM Reporter Bill Stamps. "Overall the event expanded our knowledge of government, and excited a "spark" for political information", reported HLT participant Anna of Stratford High School. 

December 18, 2010: Energy Policy Workshop

The Energy Policy Workshop gave HLT participants awareness and knowledge of energy industry issues, opportunities, and careers. Students had the chance to learn about industry career paths through a career panel discussion, develop a skill set for conducting interviews, be coached by consultants through the process of interviewing industry Subject Matter Experts, and work in teams with peers to synthesize and present the acquired information as a solution to how the energy industry could better attract their generation to fill positions upon the retirement of the current workforce.

February 26, 2011: Networking Workshop

The HLT Networking Workshop created an experience that demonstrated the importance of networking and taught participants how to maximize and expand their network. This year’s event showcased a variety of careers in various industries throughout Houston. Participants refined their “elevator pitch” in a coaching session with the chance for immediate practice in a variety of mock networking environments and interactions.
